I bought the Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod out of necessity from Amazon.com . I was trying to take very detailed images of small parts from an overhead position and I was struggling. Then I stumbled across the 055XPROB which can go vertical to horizontal in seconds. With the right tripod head (in my case the Manfrotto 3437 3D) your options are unlimited. When shooting pictures on my coffee table with the D90 facing down I simply place a bubble level on the cameras LCD and adjust the head or tripod legs accordingly.
