It’s The Lens Not The Camera

It’s very easy to get caught up in wanting the latest and greatest Nikon or Canon DSLR camera body but truth be told if you already own a decent body such as a Nikon D90, Nikon D7000, or a Canon 60D you would do far better saving your money for a professional quality lens. The points is unless your current camera does not do something you need you probably have little compelling reason to upgrade. However investing in a professional quality lens while a significant expense and most likely to cost more than a new body it is a purchase that will last many years and more importantly outlast many camera bodies. This point was really driven home to me over the last few months. You see I have been saving up some funds from side work to buy one of my dream lenses a Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens. Well at the end of June I was invited to a High School Graduation party. I decided for these once in a life time pictures I wanted to have the best lens for the job so I ordered the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Amazon Prime for a Saturday delivery which was also the day of the party. Naturally the lens arrived at the last moment and I headed off to the party without and experience with my new lens. I spent the day shooting not really knowing what to expect for results. Upon returning home and viewing the images I was blown away by the quality, detail, colors and depth of field of the images. Easily some of the best images of people I have ever taken. This lens made me realize that I no longer needed many of my other lenses for most of my photography. I certainly have no use for my small zooms and the only reason to select my fixed primes  such as 35mm or 50mm would be for their physical size.

Another recent winner is the Nikon AF-S Nikkor DX 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens attached to the D7000. The results are nothing short of stellar. The little woman is taking some of the best pictures of her life with this wonderful lens. While not technically a professional lens is the best Nikon DX zoom lens for a Nikon D7000 or Nikon D7100. This lens has not left the camera since Christmas. I am confident this lens would breath new life into an old Nikon D90.

Remember It’s the lens not the camera.
