I posted the other day that for my 53rd birthday my girl bought me a Nikon 200mm-500mm f/5.6 lens to use with my Nikon D810. For the most part the lens get’s stellar reviews. The single biggest complaint from users though is that lens collar is terrible in that it’s difficult to rotate the lens and the movement is rough. Fortunately there’s a few aftermarket lens collars for the Nikon 200-500 and the best reviewed and most recommended is the KES NC-200-500V2 Replacement Lens Collar. The Kirk solution is not cheap at just over $200. Kirk also recommends their LS-2 Lens Support Bracket for a complete solution. The support bracket is another $90 and it supports the front of lens for the purpose of making lens rotation smooth and effortless. It’s great to know this solution exists but I think before I take the plunge I’m going to see if I can modify the existing Nikon collar. I have nothing to lose.

The KES NC-200-500V2 Replacement Lens Collar for Nikon AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens from Kirk Enterprises attaches directly to the rear barrel of the lens where the original collar was and locks into place by turning the locking knob. The lens foot is made with an Arca-type compatible double-dovetail design, which adds quick release functionality to the bottom of the foot and allows other accessories to attach to the top of the foot. Also, the 6061-T6 aluminum lens has a durable black anodized finish.
By replacing the foot originally supplied, it gives the lens a lower profile and a lower center of gravity. This provides better balance and stability when the lens is placed on a gimbal-type head. Located on the bottom of the foot are two safety stops, which prevent the lens from accidentally slipping if a clamp was partially opened. Kirk Enterprises recommends using the optional LS-2 Lens Support Bracket, which produces less stress on the camera’s mount.
